Physical Security Design in Ghana

Physical security design is the engineering of a site's protection in layers — perimeter, approach, building shell, interior and asset — so that measures deter, detect, delay and support response in proportion to assessed risk. S.G. Technologies designs physical security for banks, malls, embassies-grade facilities, industrial plants and residences across Ghana, producing vendor-neutral specifications any contractor can build to.

Definition

Physical security design: The translation of assessed risk into concrete, buildable measures: site layout and CPTED principles, perimeter and barriers, lighting, guard posts and procedures, and integrated electronic systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, fire and EVACS) — documented in drawings and specifications.

What does layered security design mean in practice?

Good design assumes any single measure can fail, so protection is built in concentric layers. At the perimeter: walls, fencing, gates, vehicle control and lighting. On the approach: standoff, landscaping and natural surveillance following CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles. At the building shell: doors, glazing, locks and access-controlled entry points. Inside: zoned access control, CCTV coverage without blind spots, intrusion detection, and hardened areas for cash, servers or other critical assets. Each layer buys detection time and delay, and the design specifies how guards and responders use that time.

Why use an independent designer rather than a systems vendor?

A vendor designs around what they sell. An independent consultancy designs around your risk, then writes a specification the market competes to supply. S.G. Technologies' designs are produced by board-certified PSP (Physical Security Professional) consultants and are deliberately vendor-neutral — you receive drawings, performance specifications and bills of quantities that can be tendered, compared and audited. The firm can also install and commission, but the design stands on its own.

What projects has S.G. Technologies designed?

Since 2008 the firm has designed and implemented integrated security across the estates of banks and insurers — including centralised monitoring of 800 cameras across 23 Standard Chartered branches — as well as shopping malls in Accra and Kumasi, health facilities, industrial and utility sites, and executive residences. Designs integrate security with fire detection and EVACS so life safety and security work together rather than against each other.

What do you receive?

Deliverables are scaled to the project: concept design (layouts, layer strategy, technology choices), detailed design (device schedules, coverage plans, cable routes, integration architecture), tender documentation (specifications and BOQs), and construction-stage support — reviewing contractor submissions and witnessing testing and commissioning. FAQ

Physical Security Design in Ghana: frequently asked questions

Do you design for new buildings or only existing sites?
Both. On new builds, S.G. Technologies works alongside architects and MEP engineers so security is designed in from the start — far cheaper than retrofitting. On existing sites, design follows a risk assessment of what is already in place.
What standards do your designs follow?
Designs are benchmarked against ASIS International physical security guidance, relevant ISO standards, Ghana National Fire Service requirements where life safety is involved, and manufacturer-independent performance criteria.
Can you design just the CCTV or access control element?
Yes — single-system design is common, and S.G. Technologies maintains dedicated services for CCTV and access control. The value of full physical security design is making the systems, the building and the guard force work as one scheme.
Will the design lock us into one supplier?
No. Specifications are written around performance, not brands, so multiple contractors can bid. Where a platform choice matters for integration, options are presented with the trade-offs made explicit.
